National Bone Marrow Drive Registry: Saving Lives with NMDP

In partnership with the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. champions a life-saving cause through its National Bone Marrow Drive Registry. Every three to four minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia or other blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, and for 70% of these patients, a family-matched donor is unavailable. The NMDP, established in 1986 and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, facilitates over 100 life-saving blood stem cell transplants monthly, connecting patients with unrelated donors. NAK’s collaboration with NMDP focuses on recruiting potential blood stem cell donors, particularly from the Hispanic/Latino community, to diversify the NMDP Registry and improve match rates for patients. Since ethnic background plays a critical role in donor-patient matching, the Hispanic/Latino Stem Cell and Marrow Initiative—supported by NAK’s 22 chapters across California, Colorado, and Nevada—works tirelessly to address the urgent need for diverse donors. Currently, only 40% of the NMDP Registry represents ethnically diverse donors, making NAK’s efforts vital to ensuring equitable access to life-saving transplants. By raising awareness and encouraging registry sign-ups, NAK is helping build a world where blood cancers and rare diseases are no longer a threat.

Hispanic/Latino Stem Cell and Marrow Initiative: A Commitment to Equity

The Hispanic/Latino Stem Cell and Marrow Initiative, a cornerstone of NAK’s partnership with the NMDP, is dedicated to addressing disparities in access to blood stem cell transplants. Blood cancers and other diseases affect people of all ethnic backgrounds, yet Hispanic/Latino patients face challenges in finding matched donors due to underrepresentation in the NMDP Registry. Through this initiative, NAK and NMDP collaborate across 92 donor centers and 10 recruitment groups to expand the pool of potential Hispanic/Latino donors. This focused effort not only increases the likelihood of successful matches but also sets a standard of excellence in serving culturally diverse communities. NAK’s 22 chapters play a pivotal role in outreach, hosting drives and engaging with local communities to educate and inspire action. By championing this cause, NAK demonstrates its unwavering commitment to health equity, cultural pride, and community empowerment, ensuring that every patient has a fighting chance at a life-saving transplant.
