Crisis Management Plan

Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. (NAK) is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our members, guests, and communities through a robust Crisis Management Plan. This policy outlines clear procedures for chapter presidents and officers to follow during emergencies or tragedies, such as serious injuries, deaths, or other critical incidents, whether on or off campus. Rooted in our values of academics, culture, and brotherhood, NAK’s plan ensures swift, responsible action to protect our members and uphold our mission. Below are the key steps to manage crises effectively.

Who is in Charge During an Emergency?

The chapter president serves as the primary point of contact for any incident involving serious injury, death, or other emergencies. In their absence, the next-ranking officer of the Chapter Executive Board takes charge. Each chapter must:

• Include this procedure in their Chapter By-Laws, reviewed annually
• Update contact arrangements for the National President and chapter advisor(s) during leadership transitions
• Ensure all members know the chain of command for emergencies

Emergency Contact Protocol

Immediate action is critical in a crisis. Follow these steps:

• Call Local Emergency Services: Dial the appropriate local number (e.g., 911) for ambulance, police, or fire department assistance.
• Notify National Executive Board: Contact the National President at president@nakinc.org within 24 hours of the incident.
• Inform Advisors: Notify your Chapter Advisor and/or Greek Advisor within 24 hours. They will provide guidance and may arrive at the chapter location.
• Report to Liability Carrier: The National Executive Board will contact NAK’s liability carrier if required, depending on the incident’s nature.

If unsure about the severity of a situation, always err on the side of caution and make these calls, day or night.

Good Samaritan Policy

Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. (NAK) prioritizes the safety and well-being of our members, prospective members, and guests through our Good Samaritan Policy. This policy encourages brothers and chapters to seek immediate help during medical emergencies or crises such as alcohol poisoning, drug overdoses, or other life-threatening situations without fear of disciplinary action for certain policy violations. Rooted in our values of academics, brotherhood, and culture, NAK fosters a supportive environment across our 28 chapters in California, Colorado, and Nevada, ensuring that seeking help is always the right choice. Policy Guidelines

The Good Samaritan Policy applies to emergencies involving medical risks or safety concerns at chapter events or premises. Key guidelines include:

• Seek Help Immediately: Members or guests who call for medical assistance (e.g., 911) during a crisis will not face NAK disciplinary action for related violations of the Alcohol and Drugs Policy or other conduct policies, provided they act in good faith.
• Applies to Individuals and Chapters: This protection extends to the individual seeking help, the person in distress, and the chapter hosting the event, encouraging prompt action without fear of repercussions.
• Limited Scope: The policy covers violations directly related to the emergency (e.g., underage drinking or drug use) but does not exempt criminal acts (e.g., drug distribution, assault) or violations of the Anti-Hazing Policy.
• Cooperation Required: Individuals and chapters must cooperate fully with emergency responders, university officials, and NAK’s National Executive Board during and after the incident.
• Reporting Process: After seeking emergency help, contact the National Executive Board at neb@nakinc.org within 24 hours to report the incident and ensure proper follow-up.

NAK’s risk management education covers critical areas to promote safety and accountability. Recommended topics, conducted annually for all chapter members, include:

1. Explanation of Insurance and Risk Management Policy

• Review NAK’s Risk Management Policy discussing coverage, limitations, exclusions, costs, and named insured.
• Evaluate chapter programming (e.g., NAKfest, NAKland) in relation to risk management, emphasizing member participation in required education.

2. Criminal Liability and Basic Legal Concepts

• Address risks such as:
  • Criminal liability for chapter actions
  • Alcohol misuse and drunk driving
  • Hazing
  • Sexual abuse and harassment
  • Illegal drug use and serving alcohol to minors
  • Party-related accidents or deaths
• Explain how officers may be held criminally liable for chapter actions, reinforcing accountability.

3. Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention

  • Drug addiction, alcoholism, and substance abuse

Sexual Misconduct Policy

Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. (NAK) maintains a zero-tolerance stance on sexual misconduct, condemning all forms of sexually abusive behavior, including physical, mental, or emotional harm. Rooted in our values of academics, culture, and brotherhood, NAK is committed to preventing sexual violence, fostering respect for human dignity, and empowering survivors. Our Sexual Misconduct Policy ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and campus laws, covering consent, sexual violence, harassment, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, cyberbullying, and sexual exploitation. Across our 28 chapters in California, Colorado, and Nevada, NAK upholds the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

Policy Guidelines

NAK’s Sexual Misconduct Policy outlines clear expectations for all members, alumni, and affiliates:

• Zero Tolerance for Sexual Misconduct: NAK prohibits any form of sexual violence, harassment, or exploitation, including activities that demean or abuse others, such as hiring strippers or exotic dancers at fraternity events, per our National Risk Management Policy.
• Compliance with Laws: All members must adhere to federal, state, local, and campus laws related to sexual misconduct, including Title IX regulations.
• Mandatory Education: As part of annual chapter charter renewal, all members and chapters must attend campus- or NAK-sponsored programs on sexual misconduct prevention, Title IX resources, and bystander intervention, as outlined in our National Risk Management Policy.
• Support for Survivors: NAK empowers survivors to report incidents and access confidential support, partnering with organizations like the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and RAINN.
• Reporting and Cooperation: Members must report allegations to their campus Title IX office, which coordinates trauma-informed outreach to survivors. NAK fully cooperates with institutional or police investigations, respecting survivors’ choices to pursue or decline investigations unless pattern behavior or threats necessitate action.
• Immediate Suspension: Individuals referenced in sexual misconduct reports are immediately suspended pending investigation by authorities.

Commitment to Prevention and Education

NAK is dedicated to raising awareness and leading efforts to eliminate sexual violence. We educate members on:

• Understanding consent and Title IX resources
• Preventing domestic violence, sexual assault, and harassment
• Bystander intervention strategies
• Building healthy relationships with open communication and respect
• Avoiding sexist attitudes and promoting emotional boundaries

By partnering with campus Title IX offices and expert organizations, NAK ensures members are equipped to foster safe, inclusive environments. Our annual training, aligned with the Risk Management Education Policy, reinforces these commitments.

Reporting Sexual Misconduct

NAK encourages prompt reporting of sexual misconduct to ensure accountability and support. Options include:

• Emergency: Call 911.
• Forensic Evidence: Contact a local rape crisis center or emergency room.
• Campus Reporting: Notify your institution’s Title IX, Student Conduct, or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion office.
• Police Reporting: Report to local law enforcement.
• NAK Reporting: Contact your Chapter Advisor or submit an Incident Report.
