Alcohol and Drugs Policy

Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. (NAK) is committed to promoting a safe and responsible brotherhood, adhering to all federal, state, and local laws regarding alcohol and drugs. Our Alcohol and Drugs Policy, aligned with the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) guidelines, ensures that all chapter activities—on or off premises—uphold our values of academics, culture, and brotherhood. By maintaining a substance-free environment for new member activities and strictly regulating alcohol use, NAK fosters a respectful and inclusive community. Below are the key guidelines that all members, chapters, and guests must follow.

Policy Guidelines

  • Legal Compliance: All members, guests, and chapters must comply with federal, state, and local laws. No one under the legal drinking age may possess, consume, provide, or be provided with alcoholic beverages.
  • Zero Tolerance for Illegal Drugs: The possession, use, distribution, sale, or manufacture of illegal drugs or controlled substances is strictly prohibited at any NAK event or on chapter premises.
  • Alcohol Service Regulations:
    • Alcohol must be provided and sold per-drink by a licensed, insured third-party vendor (e.g., restaurant, bar, caterer) or brought via a Bring Your Own Beverage (BYOB) system.
    • Alcohol above 15% ABV is banned on chapter premises or at events, except when served by a licensed vendor.
  • No Bulk Alcohol: Common sources of alcohol (e.g., kegs, bulk quantities) are prohibited unless served by a licensed vendor. Alcohol quantities must align with reasonable consumption for the event duration.
  • No Chapter Funds for Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages cannot be purchased with chapter funds or pooled member/guest funds (e.g., admission fees, digital apps).
  • No Co-Sponsorship with Alcohol Providers: Chapters must not co-host or participate in events with groups or entities that provide or purchase alcohol, including bars, promoters, or distributors. Chapters may rent licensed venues for events.
  • Controlled Event Access: Events with alcohol are invitation-only, using a guest list system, with a maximum 3:1 guest-to-member ratio and adherence to fire/building code capacity limits.
  • Substance-Free New Member Events: All recruitment, intake, rush, or initiation activities (e.g., bid night, big/little events, rituals) must be free of alcohol and drugs.
  • No Rapid Consumption: Activities promoting rapid alcohol consumption, such as drinking games, are strictly prohibited.
  • Self-Governance: As an autonomous organization, NAK enforces these policies internally, ensuring accountability and compliance across all chapters.
  • NAK's Commitment to Safety

NAK’s Alcohol and Drugs Policy reflects our dedication to creating a safe, respectful environment that aligns with our mission. By prohibiting illegal substances and regulating alcohol use, we protect our members and guests while fostering a brotherhood rooted in integrity and responsibility. These guidelines, adopted per NIC Policy 1/2020, ensure that NAK remains a leader in promoting positive fraternal experiences.
